Road to Eurovision – Part 1 – First Impressions of Italy, Ukraine, Poland, Slovenia, Malta and more
|Welcome to a brand new Eurovision season. For those of you who have never seen any of our videos, we have been creating Eurovision related videos since 2018. Starting this year, we will be publishing our content in English to reach a wider audience. As every year, we look forward to sharing the excitement of Eurovision Song Contest with you. If you are a die-hard Eurovision fan like us, come join us!
This is the first episode of our video series, where we will talk about the Eurovision songs that have been released so far. Keep an eye on this channel to hear our opinions of all the songs.
Before we begin, we want to make it clear that we are not here to make flattering comments and be kind to every singer like most reaction channels. We will give you our honest opinions of the songs whether you like it or not.
Without further ado, let’s get started with Albania. Albania has one of the oldest song contests in Europe which is Festivali i Këngës. Since 2004, the competition was used to determine Albania’s Eurovision representative. Until this year, the winner of the contest would automatically receive an invitation to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. That format was changed this year, due to corruption allegations. Organisers introduced a new voting system combining public and jury voting. Those of you who know us well, know that we are huge supporters of public voting. We criticised jury voting in multiple occasions and we still advocate televoting over jury voting.
But boy, did they screw up so badly this time. We think Elsa Lila, who is the actual winner of the competition would have been a much better choice for Eurovision. Instead, televoters chose Albina & Familja Kelmendi. We are sorry but as much as we like Albina’s powerful voice and their performance as a family, this is probably one of the most uninspiring songs in this year’s contest. We love Albania but we feel like we are having a dejavu with every new entry since their majestic song in 2018.
Marco Mengoni will represent Italy this year with his song “Due vite”. We do love the song, the performance and his voice. Some of you may argue that they should have chosen another song and we hear you, considering there were quite a few good songs in Sanremo this time around. Of all the songs they had, we thought “Furore” by Paola & Chiara was the most Eurovision-esque one! Nevertheless, “Due Vite” is a great choice and he will probably get a good result.
Belgium had some good songs in recent years. We especially liked “The Wrong Place” by Hooverphonic in 2021. Unfortunately this year’s entry “Because of You” is not one of our favourites. It is one of the weakest entries in the competition this year.
It’s hard not to like Malta’s song. Let’s stop about trying to guess its chances. This is definitely a fun song and a cool performance. Every Eurovision night needs a few of these songs. We want to see The Busker in the final.
Next, we are going to share our opinions about Ukraine, Poland, Slovenia and San Marino’s songs. But before that, it’s time for our “Stunners of the day” section. Let’s remember some of the most beautiful and handsome singers that graced the Eurovision stage.
Our beauty of the day is Ukraine’s 2008 participant, Ani Lorak. The singer rocked Belgrade with one of the most energetic and fiery performances in Eurovision history. By the way, Did you know that the singer’s stage name “Ani Lorak” is the reverse pronunciation of her real name Karolina?
The handsome of the day is also from Ukraine. The group O.Torvald finished 24th in the 2017 contest in Kiev, being completely ignored – perhaps because they were the hosts. We wouldn’t be wrong If we call Yevhen, who is the lead singer of the band, one of the most handsome contestants Ukraine has ever sent to the Eurovision Song Contest.
You can use the comment section to suggest your favorite beautiful and handsome singers for our future episodes.
Back to the current Eurovision season, let’s continue with Ukraine. “Heart of Steel” by Tvorchi is by no means a bad song. But it’s definitely not a great one either. Seeing it rank so high in Eurovision odds, we don’t get what the fuss is all about.
Unlike Albania, it was the juries that got it wrong in Poland. “Gladiator” by Jann was clearly the better choice. Not only the song, but also his voice, and stage presence were all superior to Blanka’s performance. It’s safe to say that Poland shot themselves in the foot with this one.
Well, Rock-n-roll never dies, but sometimes it takes a nap. It’s very unlikely that we will hear this song again after the 2nd semi-final. “Like An Animal” is nothing special. One of San Marino’s weakest entries in recent years.
“Carpe Diem” by Joker Out is a pretty good song for Slovenia. With a good staging, it should qualify. Looking forward to see them perform.
In upcoming episodes we will keep sharing our thoughts on all the participants of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
